Fresh Italian & Chinese Chestnuts
We are offering fresh Italian and Chinese chestnuts for the holiday season!
Available mid November through December in both 1 lb and 2 lb bags.
Fresh chestnuts have a sweet, nutty and smoky flavour with a creamy texture. Superior to chestnuts typically found in local markets, Italian chestnuts have a sweeter flavour, are easier to peel and are said to taste of vanilla, hazelnut and the scent of fresh bread.
Fresh chestnuts are peeled and cooked before eating and their mild flavour makes them great for both sweet and savoury dishes alike. Most enjoyed roasted, they can also be steamed, boiled, deep-fried, candied, pureed, preserved and milled into flour.
Fresh chestnuts dry out quickly so they should be kept in a sealed container in the fridge. They can also be stored in an open mesh bag, placed in a cool and dry place for up to two months. Avoid any nuts which are soft, off-coloured, cracked or moldy.
Chestnuts are rich in various minerals, especially potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. Unlike most nuts, they contain a substantial quantity of vitamin C.
